A Cultural Journey From Inspiration to Creation
Kayanna Dehaney is a final-year student at the University of Technology, Jamaica, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts and Technology. With a strong interest in media, storytelling, and cultural documentation, she is passionate about using digital platforms to preserve and share Jamaican heritage. Her academic journey has equipped her with skills in multimedia production, web design, and visual communication, allowing her to create engaging media experiences that combine culture, creativity, and technology.
As a proud Jamaican and lover of culture, Kayanna believes that Jamaica’s identity extends far beyond its borders. Through storytelling, visuals, and interactive media, she aims to celebrate the everyday traditions, language, food, and history that make Jamaican culture unique. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for Jamaica’s cultural richness and a desire to ensure that these traditions continue to be recognised, shared, and appreciated by future generations both locally and within the diaspora.

A Cultural Journey From Yaad to Abroad
Why Gemaica Exists
Gemaica was created to celebrate, preserve, and reconnect Jamaicans around the world with the cultural experiences that shape the island’s identity. For many members of the Jamaican diaspora, living abroad can sometimes create distance from everyday traditions such as language, food, folklore, music, and shared community life. While many digital platforms highlight Jamaica, they often focus mainly on tourism rather than the deeper cultural practices that define Jamaican identity.
A Digital Cultural Space
This project was designed to bridge that gap by creating an interactive digital space where Jamaican culture can be explored, experienced, and remembered. Through multimedia storytelling, engaging activities, and cultural features, Gemaica allows users to interact with authentic aspects of Jamaican life while encouraging cultural learning and meaningful connection. In this way, the platform transforms cultural discovery into a more immersive and participatory experience.
Preserving Culture Through Technology
By combining culture with digital media, Gemaica demonstrates how technology can support the preservation of heritage while making it accessible to a global audience. The platform encourages users not only to learn about Jamaican culture, but also to engage with it through stories, visuals, games, and shared experiences. Through this approach, cultural preservation becomes an active journey that invites participation rather than passive observation.
More importantly, Gemaica reminds us that culture lives within everyday moment – in the language we speak, the food we prepare, the stories we share, and the traditions we pass on. By documenting and celebrating these experiences, the project contributes to preserving Jamaican identity for future generations while strengthening the connection between the island and its diaspora. In doing so, it helps ensure that the spirit of Jamaica continues to thrive across borders.
